Honesty over upselling

What We Don’t Do — And Why We’d Rather Tell You Now

Most detailing sites tell you everything they offer. This page is the opposite: a plain list of the work we turn away, the services we won’t sell, and the upsells we skip — because refusing the wrong job is worth more to you long-term than one extra invoice is worth to us.

Why we built this page

Refusing Work Is a Trust Signal, Not a Weakness

Almost every detailer in Oakland will quote you on anything you ask for, because saying yes closes the sale. We take the opposite approach: if a job isn’t worth doing, isn’t something we can do properly at a curb, or isn’t something your car actually needs, we say so before you pay — even when it costs us the invoice.

This isn’t a marketing angle. It’s the same standard we apply to our own vehicles, parked a few blocks off the Nimitz in West Oakland, inside the Port’s fallout zone.

What We Don’t Do, and What We Do Instead

✕We don’t install paint protection film

PPF needs a genuinely controlled, dust-free environment to bond and cure properly — a curb in West Oakland, even a calm one, isn’t that environment. Installing it outdoors risks trapped debris under the film and edges that lift within months.

What we do instead: we’re happy to refer you to a shop that installs PPF indoors, and we’ll still handle the paint correction and decontamination that should happen before any film goes on.

✕We don’t coat over failed clear coat

If your clear coat is chalky, patchy or peeling — common on older black and red cars that have street-parked through a decade of Oakland sun — no amount of polishing brings it back. A ceramic coating bonds to whatever is underneath it, so coating failed clear coat just locks the failure in for years instead of fixing it.

What we do instead: we tell you honestly that the car needs paint, not a coating, and let you make that call with real information rather than a sales pitch.

✕We don’t chase scratches deep enough to catch a thumbnail

A scratch your nail catches when you run it across the panel is past what a dual-action polisher should safely correct. Forcing it generates heat and removes more clear coat than the panel can spare, which risks burning through to the base coat.

What we do instead: we correct everything a polisher can safely handle and point you to a body shop for anything deeper.

✕We don’t sell multi-stage correction on a car you’re listing next week

If you’re selling privately or turning in a lease in the next few days, a $1,500 correction package won’t return itself in resale value on that timeline. A good interior detail and a one-step polish will move most cars just fine.

What we do instead: we ask what the car is for before recommending a package, and we’ll actively steer you toward the cheaper option when it’s the right one.

✕We don’t charge a travel fee or a weekend surcharge

Some mobile operators add a call-out fee or charge more for Saturday bookings. We build travel time into our base pricing instead of itemising it separately, because a fee that only appears once you’re mid-conversation feels like a bait-and-switch.

What we do instead: one published price on our pricing page, seven days a week, anywhere in our service area.

✕We don’t upsell pet hair removal, engine bays or add-ons without asking

Add-ons like pet hair removal, engine bay detailing and headlight restoration are priced and offered — never assumed and added to your invoice as a surprise. If we notice something during the walkaround that would benefit from an add-on, we ask first.

What we do instead: every add-on is quoted and approved before we do it, not discovered after.

✕We don’t guess at mould, water damage or odour jobs sight unseen

A “clean the mould out” request over the phone can mean anything from a light surface job to a genuine remediation with a compromised headliner. We won’t quote blind on these — we ask enough questions on the triage call to scope it honestly, or we look before we commit to a number.

What we do instead: a real walkaround and, where needed, a revised quote you approve before we proceed — see our six-step process for exactly how that works.

✕We don’t take on jobs outside our service area without saying so upfront

If your address falls outside Oakland and the East Bay cities we cover, we’ll tell you immediately rather than booking the appointment and adding a large travel charge later.

What we do instead: a clearly published service area, and an honest “that’s outside our range” when it’s true — sometimes with a referral if we know a detailer who covers it.

What This Adds Up To

  • You get an honest recommendation, not the most expensive package by default
  • Every price is published before you book — no surprise call-out or weekend fees
  • Every add-on is approved before it’s added, not discovered on the invoice
  • Jobs we can’t do properly at a curb, we say so and point you elsewhere
  • You inspect the finished car in daylight before you pay, every time

What We Don’t Do — FAQ

If you don’t do PPF, can you still recommend someone who does?

Yes — ask us and we’ll point you to a shop we trust for installation. We’ll still handle any correction or decontamination your paint needs beforehand.

Will you tell me if I don’t need the service I called about?

Yes, consistently. If a lighter package or a different service altogether solves your actual problem, we say so — see our pricing page for the full range of options at different price points.

Does refusing work mean you’re not confident in your skills?

The opposite. Knowing where machine polishing and mobile equipment stop being the right tool for the job is part of doing the work properly — the alternative is promising results we can’t actually deliver.
