Our story
Why We Built a Mobile-Only Detailing Company in Oakland
Oakland is a city of roughly 438,000 people packed into about 56 square miles, and 57.7% of its households rent. The median home here was built in 1953, and 37.2% of the housing stock predates 1940. Driveways and garages aren’t the norm in this city — they’re the exception.
On top of that, East Bay MUD’s water-waste rules are permanent, not drought-triggered: you can’t wash a vehicle with a hose that lacks a shut-off nozzle. Most apartment buildings and HOAs ban on-site washing outright.
Put those together and you get a city where most people physically cannot wash their own car — while those same cars sit outside 24 hours a day collecting salt, sap, brake dust and bird droppings.
The problem we kept running into
People told us the same three things over and over. Shops wouldn’t quote a price without seeing the car. Mobile detailers would take the booking, then cancel on the day once they saw the street. And nobody would touch the jobs Oakland actually needs — glass in the seat rails after a break-in, mould in a footwell after a wet-season storm, fuel odour in a car that just came back from being stolen.
So the people who needed help most kept getting turned away.
What we built instead

We’d rather tell you on the phone that your block won’t work than take your deposit and cancel Saturday morning. And we’d rather talk you out of a coating your clear coat can’t hold than sell you one that peels.
The local context
What Makes Oakland a Different Detailing Market
Oakland sits in a Mediterranean climate zone — Köppen Csb. Dry summers, wet winters, and a marine layer off the Bay most mornings. Five specific forces act on paint here that don’t act the same way twenty miles inland.
Salt air that never dries out
The Bay puts chloride into the air and the marine layer holds humidity high enough that it stays dissolved. Salt sits on your paint as a corrosive film rather than a harmless crystal.
That makes corrosion a continuous background process here, not a storm event. It targets door bottoms, rocker panels, wheel wells, exposed fasteners and every existing rock chip. March carries the highest humidity of the year at around 75% — peak salt-film season.
The I-880 truck asymmetry
Here’s something most Oakland drivers have never been told. Trucks over 4.5 tons have been banned on I-580 between Grand Avenue and Foothill Boulevard since the 1950s. All of that traffic is pushed onto I-880 instead.
Roughly 80–95% of diesel exhaust particles measure under one micron, and they carry metals alongside the carbon. Those particles embed in clear coat porosity and oxidise. That’s the orange-brown freckling on white and silver cars around West Oakland, Prescott and Jack London Square — and a wash will never remove it.
Oak canopy and Lake Merritt’s birds
The city is named for its oaks and you pay for the shade. Coast live oaks drop sap, and the aphids living in them drop honeydew — the fine sticky mist that coats everything parked under canopy in Rockridge, Temescal, Glenview, Crocker Highlands and along Piedmont Avenue.
Lake Merritt has been a designated wildlife refuge since 1870 — the first in North America. If you park in Adams Point or Grand Lake you already know what that means. Droppings are acidic and begin etching clear coat within a day or two in direct sun.
September — the month nobody plans for
September is Oakland’s warmest month, averaging around 74°F, and it lands directly on top of peak Northern California wildfire season.
Wildfire ash is alkaline and abrasive. The single fastest way to install swirl marks in a clear coat is to wipe a dusty, ash-covered car with a dry towel. If your car is covered in ash, don’t touch it dry — rinse it, or call us.
The aftermath work nobody else does
Oakland recorded roughly 15,000 vehicles reported stolen in 2023 — about one for every 30 residents — and 13,076 reported break-ins the same year. We won’t pretend to know the current trend; the city’s own reporting has been publicly questioned.
What we do know is the physical aftermath, because we clean it. Tempered glass buried in seat rails, seatbelt retractors and HVAC vents. Fuel odour from a siphoned tank. Damp carpet under a plastic-sheeted window — which starts going musty in Oakland’s marine air within 48 to 72 hours.

What we don’t do — and why we’d rather tell you now
- We don’t install paint protection film. PPF needs a genuinely controlled, dust-free environment. Doing it at a curb in West Oakland would be doing it badly. We’ll refer you rather than fake it.
- We don’t coat failed clear coat. If your paint is chalky, patchy or peeling — common on older black and red cars that have street-parked through a decade of Oakland sun — polishing won’t bring it back. That’s a repaint, and a coating over it will just peel with it.
- We don’t chase scratches your thumbnail catches. Forcing a polisher that deep generates heat and removes clear coat you can never get back. That’s a paint shop’s job, not ours.
- We don’t quote a multi-stage correction on a car you’re listing next week. A good interior and a one-step polish will move it. We’ll say so.
- We don’t charge a travel fee or a weekend surcharge. If we did, it would be in the published table.

Triage by phone or text
Year, make, model and your cross streets. We ask about parking, pets, and anything unusual — spilled fuel, a broken window, standing water — so the van arrives loaded for the actual job rather than a generic one.
A real number, not a range
You get a written price before we book, usually within the hour during business hours. Condition moves price more than size does, which is why we ask the questions we ask.
Walkaround on arrival
Existing damage identified and pointed out before we start. If we find something that changes the scope — failed clear coat, a leak we didn’t expect — you hear it then, not in the invoice.
Decontaminate, then clean
Wheels first, then iron removal and clay before any polish touches the paint. Skipping decontamination is how a “correction” turns into dragging embedded grit across a panel — which is exactly how swirl marks get installed in the first place.
Protect and finish
Sealant or coating on the exterior, UV protectant on interior surfaces, glass done last so nothing hazes it over. Forced air through door shuts, trim gaps and badge edges so nothing drips an hour later.

Yes, and we do it regularly. Failed clear coat needs paint, not a coating. A car you’re listing next week doesn’t need multi-stage correction. Mould from a plugged sunroof drain will come back next winter if you don’t clear the drain — so we’ll show you where the drains are before we leave, even though that costs us the repeat job.
Can you handle a car after a break-in or theft recovery?
Yes — it’s one of our core services and one almost no Oakland detailer advertises. What Another Season of Oakland Weather Actually Does
